My latest work, Fortune Cookies.
Bernadine Wang is a mixed-media artist that tells her story as a first-generation immigrant through glassmaking and other art forms. After moving to the US in her 20s, her art captures her struggles to find a sense of belonging as an immigrant in America.
Growing up in Taipei, Taiwan, her creative journey started with watching her parents work in fashion and media. After moving to the US, she worked as a photographer after earning a BFA at the Academy of Art University. Bernadine then turned to jewelry while juggling life as a working mother. She studied jewelry making at the Revere Academy in San Francisco, and trained with Italian masters in sculpting and enameling. These experiences eventually brought her to glass making.
Glass gave her the ability to incorporate the different skills and techniques she had used in previous mediums. What draws Bernadine to glass is her appreciation for light and composition. Glass captures light in ways that reflect and refract reality to the viewer. It creates worlds to tell stories and invokes moments of play. Bernadine uses glass to tell her story.
